Beginning in Spring 2023, the City is excited to “roll out” a new Senior Transportation Program – Golden Wheels. Through the generous grant Measure I funding provided by OmniTrans, the City is purchasing two (2) vans. Golden Wheels will provide daily transportation (Monday through Friday, excluding holidays), between 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., for seniors and disabled persons, thus fostering opportunity. The opportunities provided to seniors would include basic needs such as grocery shopping, pharmacy visits, and additional personal transportation needs within City limits, as well as the proposed quality of life excursions to experience, music, art, theater, and other recreation-type programs.
The Golden Wheels implementation plan includes flexible routes, including the main streets of Yucaipa Boulevard, Oak Glen Road, and Bryant Street, while having the opportunity to provide curb-to-curb service within each street in between. This will enable all 28.39 square miles of the City of Yucaipa to be accessible to residents. Defined routes will be based on senior transportation needs and locations of destinations. The City of Yucaipa will not limit routes inside of City limits.
The Golden Wheels program is planned to be free (complimentary) for those traveling within the City of Yucaipa boundaries and will have a low-cost fee to seniors traveling on excursions to be offered by the City of Yucaipa Community Services Department.
The Golden Wheels staff will accept calls from the Scherer Community Center during the facility’s operating hours. Senior riders must contact the Golden Wheels program staff at least 24 hours in advance to arrange for transportation. Requests will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Riders must be prepared to notify the staff of the rider’s name(s), and address(es) of destination(s). Additionally, state if they are a new rider to the Golden Wheels program, as a waiver is required before the rider’s first trip. While the Golden Wheels program will offer curb-to-curb service, riders must meet the vehicle at the curb.
